I suppose if frugality is the name of the game, modifying the battery via the Instructables project you mentioned is the way to go, but if you're concerned about not doing it right, you may want to search for some kind of AC adapter for those cameras.
PS - I've used aftermarket batteries nearly exclusively when I had the T2i and they lasted as long, if not longer than the official Canon batteries. But that's just my experience.
